Fast detector development towards high-dose reate challenges

The emergent FLASH RadioTherapy uses ultrahigh dose-rate irradiation (up to 10^7 Gy/s in each μs pulse) to deliver a single high dose of irradiation in a very short time (less than 200 milliseconds). Pre-clinical studies at ultrahigh dose-rates recently showed an increased ratio between tumoricidal effect and normal tissue toxicity (therapeutic index), compared to conventional RT at standard Gy/min dose-rates. If confirmed by biological in vivo validations, this could represent a breakthrough in cancer treatment.

The reliability and the accuracy of experimental studies are nowadays limited by the lack of detectors able to measure online the beam fluence at FLASH dose- rates.

With the aim to challenge the ionization chamber technology, DE.TEC.TOR. customized one of its devices with dedicated hardware design choices dealing to charge recombination effects while avoiding critical electrical discharges. Moreover, this detector R&D prototype integrates TERA09, our latest version of front-end readout electronics designed for high dynamic ranges up to a few mA current as signal collected at the detector electrodes.

With this detector prototype we performed a preliminary test at the Holland Proton Therapy Center experimental room in late autumn 2020. During this study campaign the Varian ProBeam cyclotron delivered up to 90 nA current to the target.

Each detector is carefully designed, assembled and tested in our headquarter in Turin  where the DE.TEC.TOR. team work with passion, hands on every device parts among:

  • software for data collection, device control and data analysis
  • hardware differing between the development of the electronics (PCB design) and sensors (anodes design and signal path optimisation and management)
  • mechanics, including concept design and case modelling, system integration and setup.
